Two months before the first ball of Season 5, Graeme Smith used the launch to make a promise to the people in the stands: the league still belongs to them.

Two months before the first ball of Season 5, Graeme Smith used the launch to make a promise to the people in the stands. The league commissioner, speaking at the Season 5 launch on 5 November, framed the new campaign around the supporters who have filled the grounds since the first season, and around the standard of cricket they will watch. The season starts on 17 January 2027 and runs to the final on 21 February.

The shape of the season is set. Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the three-time champions, open against Pretoria Capitals at St George's Park in Gqeberha on 17 January, a repeat of last season's final. From there the competition visits six cities, with matches spread across the week, Mondays included, before the playoffs decide who reaches the final at Newlands on 21 February.

Smith's message was that the blend which has defined the league stays in place: international stars alongside South Africa's Proteas and the next wave of domestic talent. The launch also carried the practical news supporters care about most. Frenzy tickets start from R50 for all opening fixtures and selected matches, and stadium ticket offices begin selling from 15 November, giving fans several weeks to secure seats before the opener.

What Smith said at the launch

Smith kept returning to the same idea: the fans made the league what it is. He said Season 5 is the league's way of saying thank you to the supporters who have filled the stadiums and brought the noise, and he summed it up in the line that gave the launch its theme, that the SA20 still belongs to the fans.

On the cricket itself, his message was continuity rather than change. The standard, he said, keeps rising each season, and Season 5 will be no different. What makes the league work, in his telling, is that it is for everyone at once: the lifelong fan, the family bringing children to a match for the first time, and the group of friends out for a day at the ground. There is a place in the stands for each of them.

Six cities, Mondays included

The schedule takes the season to Gqeberha, Paarl, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg, with fixtures spread across the week rather than bunched into weekends. Mondays are on the calendar, a sign of how far the league has come from a tournament that once had to fight for attention on any day at all.

The road ends where the last two seasons have pointed: the final at Newlands on 21 February. Cape Town hosts the decider, and the city has already put its weight behind it, agreeing a sponsorship package for the finals at the end of Season 5 and the 2028/29 season.

Tickets from R50, counters open 15 November

The cheapest way into Season 5 stays cheap. Frenzy tickets start from R50, about three dollars, for all opening fixtures and selected matches. For supporters who prefer to buy in person, stadium ticket offices open on 15 November.

That leaves two months between the counters opening and the first ball in Gqeberha, and the league is counting on the combination of low prices and early sales to keep the stands full. The tickets page carries the full picture on prices and where to buy.
