Cape Town council has backed the SA20 final with R5m across two seasons, R2.5m for 2026/27 and R2.5m for 2028/29.

Cape Town council has put R5m behind the SA20 final across two seasons, approving R2.5m for the 2026/27 final and a further R2.5m for 2028/29. The decision came at a special council meeting on Thursday 29 October, and it keeps the city's backing behind a showpiece that has sold out every final it has hosted so far. The next one is the Season 5 final at Newlands on 21 February 2027.

The money is only part of the package. Council also gave the go-ahead for the Urban Mobility directorate to consider waiving parking permit fees around the event, and approved a waiver of the poster and swivel banner tariff fees for the years of the sponsorship. The council report behind the decision argued that a multi-year agreement helps with the long-term planning and delivery of the event, which takes years to put together rather than months.

The numbers in that report explain why the city wants the final to stay. The 2026 final drew about 14,000 spectators to Newlands, and 22 of the 34 matches in the 2026 tournament sold out, up from 17 the season before. The report also noted that the league has raised R590,000 for community development initiatives, including grassroots cricket programmes. There will be no SA20 season in 2028, because South Africa hosts the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, so the second R2.5m covers the 2028/29 season rather than the year after next.

Not every councillor was comfortable committing the second payment now. Freedom Front Plus councillor Emre Uygun backed the R2.5m for 2026/27 but questioned locking in the same amount for 2028/29 more than two years in advance, arguing that circumstances, budgets and priorities may change, and that ratepayers are already under pressure as rates and tariffs rise. He pointed to growth of just 0.6% in the first quarter of the year, and said council could assess the 2026/27 event and the city's finances closer to the time.

The ANC's Phindile George supported the backing while asking who benefits from it. Major events like the SA20 final promote social cohesion and tourism, he said, but the hosting must also open up inclusive local economic development rather than leaving residents watching from the sidelines while established businesses take the opportunities. The DA's Yusuf Mohamed took the other side of the timing argument, saying big events take two to three years to plan and carry real financial implications, so allocating the funding early is not premature.

For supporters, the practical effect is simple: the final stays in Cape Town, and the build-up to it is already under way. Season 5 runs from 17 January to 21 February 2027, with 34 matches across six grounds, and general sale for the season opened on 5 November. The final at Newlands closes the season, and the city's two-season commitment means the ground is now pencilled in as the home of the showpiece well beyond February.

What the R5m covers

The headline figure is the sponsorship itself: R2.5m for the final at the end of Season 5 and the same again for the final that closes the 2028/29 season. Around it sit the two fee decisions, one to consider waiving parking permit fees and one already approved to waive poster and swivel banner tariffs while the sponsorship runs. None of this is prize money or a payment to the teams. It is the city paying to keep the final in Cape Town and to make staging it simpler.

The council report framed the spending as an investment in the city's standing as a host of major sporting events, with the international visibility that comes with a sold-out final at Newlands. Every SA20 final to date has sold out, and the 2026 tournament improved on the previous season with 22 sell-outs against 17. That track record is the core of the city's case for committing two seasons at once rather than one.

The debate in council

The disagreement was not about whether the final is worth hosting. It was about timing. The opposition case, put by the Freedom Front Plus, was that ratepayers' money should not be committed more than two years ahead when budgets and priorities can change, and that the second payment should wait for an assessment of the 2026/27 event and a review of the city's financial position.

The counter-argument, put by the DA, was that events of this size are planned two to three years out, with financial commitments that cannot wait until the last minute. The ANC added a different condition altogether: that the final must deliver inclusive local economic development, not just a spectacle for visitors. All three positions were recorded in the same meeting, and the sponsorship passed with the second season attached.
