Kieron Pollard has told Joburg Super Kings he will not play in SA20 2027, less than three weeks after the franchise bought him at the Season 5 auction.

Kieron Pollard has told Joburg Super Kings he will not play for them in SA20 Season 5, less than three weeks after the franchise bought him for R1.5 million at the player auction. The decision came within a day of his appointment as Mumbai Indians head coach for IPL 2027, and it means he will not line up against MI Cape Town, the franchise he represented for the past two seasons.

Pollard was unveiled as the new Mumbai Indians head coach on Saturday 24 October, replacing Mahela Jayawardene. A day later he informed Joburg Super Kings that he would be unavailable for the season. The Super Kings group confirmed the news through its chief executive, Kasi Viswanathan, who said: "He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings. We will now look for a replacement."

The franchise is allowed to look beyond the auction to fill the gap. Joburg Super Kings may sign a replacement from outside the auction pool, an option confirmed directly with the team, and no replacement had been named as of 5 November. The season starts on 17 January 2027, so there is time, but the search starts with one of the auction's most recognisable names already gone.

Pollard's exit is easy to understand once his recent career is laid out. He played 12 matches for MI Cape Town across the 2024 and 2025-26 seasons, scoring 207 runs at a strike rate of 171.07, and his ties to the Mumbai Indians group run far wider than one team: he coaches MI London in The Hundred, has played for MI New York in Major League Cricket and MI Emirates in the ILT20, and spent 13 seasons with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, winning five titles. Turning out for a franchise owned by the Chennai Super Kings group, against a Mumbai Indians team, would have put him on the opposite side of his own employers.

Nobody at Mumbai Indians ordered the decision. The franchise left it to Pollard himself, saying it was up to him and that no instructions had been given. That matters, because the awkwardness was real either way: had he played, his first meeting with his old team would have come on Tuesday 20 January at Newlands, when MI Cape Town host Joburg Super Kings in the fourth match of the season.

What Joburg lose is a finisher with a record few in the format can match. Pollard is one run short of 15,000 runs in T20 cricket, a mark only Jos Buttler has reached, and at 39 he is still active around the world, most recently with Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League in August and September. The withdrawal has already started a wider argument: former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has called for players who pull out after an auction without good reason, such as injury or international duty, to face fines worth three times their auction fee, and for the game's governing body to look at how many leagues a player can join in a year.

Why Pollard walked away

The coaching appointment is the whole story. Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a 22-year-old in 2010 and stayed for 13 seasons, and the group has kept him close ever since, as a player with its teams in South Africa, the United States and the United Arab Emirates, and as a coach with its London side. The head coach job is the biggest role he has held in that family, and it arrived three weeks after a rival group had bought him to play against them.

There is no suggestion of a falling-out anywhere in the chain. Mumbai Indians did not tell him to withdraw, Joburg Super Kings accepted the decision straight away, and the league has given the franchise a way to replace him. It is a clean break, but it still leaves Joburg short of the middle-order power they paid for, and it leaves Pollard's own T20 run tally frozen one run short of 15,000 until he plays again somewhere else.

What happens next for Joburg

The practical question is who takes the overseas slot. Joburg can sign from outside the auction pool, which widens the field beyond the players who went unsold in Johannesburg, and the franchise has just over two months before the season starts to make the call. The first home game, against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the Wanderers on 23 January, is the natural deadline for the new signing to be in place.

The withdrawal also reopens a question the league will have to answer sooner or later: what happens when a player signs at auction and then takes a coaching job elsewhere. Ashwin's answer is fines worth three times the auction fee and a cap on how many leagues a player can join each year. Whether the league agrees or not, Pollard's exit is the clearest example yet of the problem, and it happened to one of the biggest names in the auction.
