Five New SA20 Season 5 Faces Who Could Change the Season

Nineteen auction buys, a handful of pre-signings and four wildcards reshaped Season 5. Five new names stand out above the rest.

By Saleem Sial · 4 Nov 2026

All six Season 5 squads are complete at 19 players each, and the new names arrived three ways: the auction on 7 October 2026, pre-signings before it, and wildcard picks after it. Nineteen players were sold at the auction, and the pre-signings and wildcards added more. Five new names stand out, not because they cost the most, but because of what each one changes for his team: a record teenager, a returning captain, a champion's returning all-rounder, a middle-order hitter and a new-ball bowler.

Each player below is listed with his team, how he arrived, and the date of his first game, all from the verified squad lists and fixture list.

Key facts

Auction buys19 players, R18.475 million total
Most expensive new nameJason Rowles, R2.9 million to Joburg Super Kings
Season starts17 January 2027

Jason Rowles, Joburg Super Kings: the R2.9m teenager

Rowles is 18, an all-rounder, and the most expensive player of the Season 5 auction at R2.9 million to Joburg Super Kings. He joins his hometown team and plays at the Wanderers, and Joburg head coach Albie Morkel had said the team tracked him for more than a year before the auction. That matters: this is not a bidding-room gamble, it is a planned pick. His first game is against Paarl Royals at Boland Park on 18 January, and the question from that day on is whether a teenager can carry the price tag as well as the talent.

Temba Bavuma, Pretoria Capitals: the captain returns

Bavuma is 36, the Proteas Test and ODI captain, and he returns to the SA20 with Pretoria Capitals after missing the last two seasons. He led South Africa to the World Test Championship title, and he joins a team that has finished runners-up twice in four seasons. His first game is the season opener itself, against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at St George's Park on 17 January. If Pretoria are going to go one step further this season, their new captain's experience is a large part of why.

Craig Overton, Sunrisers Eastern Cape: back with the champions

Overton is an England all-rounder who cost Sunrisers Eastern Cape R1.5 million at the auction, and he returns to the champions after playing for them before. He said he was buzzing to be back at St George's Park for the fifth season of the SA20, in front of the Orange Army and the St George's band. His first game is also the opener, against Pretoria Capitals on 17 January, and he joins a squad that kept 15 players from the title-winning group. Champions rarely need many new names. Overton is the one they chose.

Shimron Hetmyer, MI Cape Town: middle-order power

Hetmyer is a West Indies batter who cost MI Cape Town R1.5 million, and he joins a batting group built around Nicholas Pooran. His job is the middle overs and the death, where games are finished rather than started, and his first game is against Joburg Super Kings at Newlands on 20 January. MI Cape Town won the title in 2025, and Hetmyer is the kind of signing champions make: not a rebuild, a finishing piece.

Trent Boult, MI Cape Town: the new-ball fix

Boult is a New Zealand left-arm fast bowler who also cost MI Cape Town R1.5 million, and his job is the first over. Left-arm pace that swings the new ball is the hardest thing to face in the first six overs, and it is what MI Cape Town bought him for. Like Hetmyer, his first game is against Joburg Super Kings at Newlands on 20 January, which means his first test is against the auction's biggest spenders. If Boult starts well, MI Cape Town's title defence starts well with him.
